How to spot a fake Nitro gift link
Check the domain, and nothing else. A genuine Discord Nitro gift link is on discord.gift or a discord.com gift path. Any other domain is fake, no matter how convincing the page looks or who sent it. A real gift also never asks you to log in again, because you already are.
The check, in order
- Read the domain, right to left. The part immediately before the first single slash is the real host. In
discord.gift.claim-nitro.ru/abcthe actual domain isclaim-nitro.ru. The "discord.gift" at the front is just decoration. - Reject anything that is not exactly
discord.giftordiscord.com. Notdiscordgift.com, notdiscord-gift.net, notdlscord.giftwith a lowercase L standing in for the I. - Refuse any login prompt. You are already signed in. A gift claim that shows you a login form is showing you a copy of one.
- Refuse QR codes. Scanning a login QR with the Discord app authorises that session on your account. This is the fastest known account takeover and takes seconds.
The lookalike-character trick. Substituting a lowercase L for an uppercase I, a zero for an O, or adding a hyphen produces domains that are visually near-identical at a glance. This is why the advice is to read the domain rather than recognise it: recognition is exactly what the technique defeats.
Where these links arrive
- From a friend. The most effective delivery route, because their account was already taken and the message sends itself to their whole contact list.
- From a bot impersonating Discord. Named something like "Discord System" with a matching avatar. Real Discord staff communication does not work this way.
- Pasted in a server. Often in a busy channel where moderators are slow to catch it.
- Attached to a fake giveaway announcement. Sometimes copying a real server's branding, including ours.
What a real gift actually does
A genuine Nitro gift appears inside Discord as a claimable item. You press accept and the subscription starts. There is no separate site, no form, no verification step and no payment method requested. The entire flow happens where you already are.
So the practical rule is short: if claiming a gift takes you out of Discord and asks you for something, it is not a gift.
If you already entered something
- Open the real Discord app and change your password there. Do not use any link from the message.
- Turn on two-factor authentication if it is not already on.
- In Settings → Devices, log out every session you do not recognise.
- In Settings → Authorized Apps, revoke anything unfamiliar.
- Warn whoever sent it to you, through some other channel, so they can do the same.
Changing the password invalidates stolen session tokens, which is the part that matters most. Doing it quickly is worth more than doing it perfectly.
Questions people ask
What does a real Discord Nitro gift link look like?
It is on discord.gift, or a discord.com gift path. Anything else, including domains that merely contain the word discord, is not Discord.
I clicked a fake Nitro link. What now?
If you only clicked and closed it, you are almost certainly fine. If you entered your password or scanned a QR code, change your password from inside the Discord app immediately, enable two-factor authentication, and log out all other sessions in Settings.
Can clicking a link alone steal my account?
Clicking alone is unlikely to be enough. The theft happens when you enter credentials, authorise a QR login, or run a download. That is why the advice is to check the domain before you type anything.
Why did my friend send me a fake Nitro link?
Their account was almost certainly compromised and is sending the message automatically. Tell them through another channel so they can secure it.
Does Discord ever DM me about free Nitro?
Discord does not send unsolicited direct messages offering free Nitro. Real offers appear inside the app's own interface.
